Forensic Signature and Handwriting Examination:
As a Handwriting Expert, Robert Radley has given evidence in more than a dozen countries worldwide. Casework typically includes:
- Examination of documents in cases of disputed signature authentication, i.e. questioned signatures or alleged signature forgery, simulation of signatures, tracings, examination of deteriorated signatures due to ill health, examination for evidence of transposed signatures on photocopy documents, examination of guided hand signatures, etc.
- Forensic handwriting examination - to establish or eliminate common authorship of documents, to differentiate between genuine and forged handwritings, examination of disguised writings etc.
Naturally, the original document in question and comparison materials have to be presented for examination, if in existence. On occasions, work can be undertaken on photocopies but this may lead to a restriction on the examination and therefore affect the level of confidence of opinion.
Handwriting Experts therefore may offer opinions of varying strengths dependent upon the evidence available which in turn will be dependent upon:
- The nature of the writing/signatures concerned and how personalised the writing characteristics may be.
- The volume of writing concerned.
- The quantity and suitability of handwriting/signatures that could be made available for comparison purposes.
Other factors may be of significance such as:
- Whether the writing/signatures in question are deteriorated due to ill health/advancing years.
- Whether disguise has been adopted.
- Whether signatures may have been produced with a guided hand, i.e. assistance given by someone other than the signatory in the writing process.
On receipt of copies of the documentation concerned, advice can be given as to the most suitable form of comparison handwriting which will invariably require course of business handwritings or signatures to be presented, possibly in conjunction with specimen exemplars produced specifically for the comparison process.
