The Forensic Document Laboratory deals exclusively with the forensic examination of signatures, handwriting and documents.
Examinations are undertaken with scientific objectivity. Reports are prepared for a variety of courts, both Civil and Criminal both in the UK and abroad (see About Robert Radley).
Mr Radley has been instructed by a large number of solicitors in this country and abroad as well as all major clearing banks in England and many other banks and solicitors worldwide. Other clients employing his services include insurance and finance companies, Local Government Authorities, Trading Standards Departments, the British Armed Forces, building societies, The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, the CPS and Serious Fraud Office, the US Department of Justice and a wide variety of private and public companies.
For a number of practical and ethical reasons, instruction is not accepted from private individuals but is accepted only directly from members of the legal profession, law enforcement agencies, investigators, banks, companies etc.
Where appropriate, assistance can be given with the preparation of critiques of other expert reports and notes can be prepared for cross examination of opposing experts or, indeed, a written scheme of questioning if required.
One of the objectives of reports and correspondence with clients is to try to educate and illuminate those instructing on the various techniques that are available, thereby enabling them to understand the significance, reliability and applicability of those techniques.
This Practice has always taken the view that any examination should be of the disputed document as a whole and should not necessarily be confined to the area identified by instructing clients. Full examination of the whole document may reveal significant further evidence relating to the authenticity of the same.
Robert Radley is not only a handwriting expert but also has expertise in all other aspects of the examination of documents with reports prepared on a broad spectrum of issues (see Work Undertaken).
Following the examination, a detailed report is prepared. In the case of Civil casework, this would naturally be in compliance with the CPR requirements and in Criminal casework, in the form of a Section 9 Statement. The report will detail the instructions received, present a schedule of documents examined , a summary of findings, together with a detailed explanation of examinations undertaken and issues considered. A Glossary of Opinion Terminology will also be appended to the report. Any opinion offered is naturally based on clearly demonstrable evidence.
